WOW! So many time saving recipes...
This book is a real time saver for my family in the kitchen! It is full of wonderful recipes that require little or no supervision using the crock pot. It is so nice to be able to add ingredients to your slow cooker in the morning, go about your everyday business, and have dinner waiting for you when you get home! I highly recommend this book to busy mothers and career women alike! It is a true gem to have in your kitchen.

Up the country : a saga of pioneering days
Published in Unknown Binding by Angus & Robertson Publishers ()
Author: Miles Franklin
Average review score:

great outback saga
I read this a long time ago, so I wouldn't presume to write a review except that nobody else has. This book, as far as I can remember, is cool. It's about pioneer types and who loves who and who rides with who through the bush and floods and fire and stuff. As far as I can remember, this isn't really meaty literature like some of MF's other stuff; but it's a good read! Kind of like a tougher, Australian version of all those Anne at Green Gables books.

The Viking's Revenge (Hardy Boys Casefiles , No 124)
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (July, 1997)
Author: Franklin W. Dixon
Average review score:

It was pretty good
It had a lot of freaky moments but, I liked hearing about the Vikings and I was surprised by the turnout.

Walking Snowman

The Walking Snowman
This was a pretty good book for my nine year old and I to read together. We enjoyed trying to figure out, along with Frank and Joe, where the snowman could have gone. This book is also short enough that "challenged readers" shouldn't get overwhelmed. We would recommend this book.

Water Flying
Published in Hardcover by MacMillan Publishing Company (January, 1974)
Author: Franklin T. Kurt
Average review score:

Wish I owned a copy
Excellent book describing the details of flying water craft -- both seaplanes and float planes -- by an old-time flyer. He's flown them all, from Vikings on up. His acknowledgements is a who's who of seaplane designers. Some good common sense seaplane design info is included here, but no empirical data.

Web of Horror (Hardy Boys, No 53)
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (July, 1991)
Authors: Franklin W. Dixon and Ann Greenberg
Average review score:

It is a murder mystery that is set on a movie shoot.
Frank and Joe Hardy are an exciting duo who encounter individuals trying to derail thaem off the right track to solve the mystery. The Hardy brothers were almost knocked off the case when the brothers were driving down a foresty road and somebody fired a gun from a tree at their gas tank attempting to blow up their car. Throughout the book, the Hardy brothers always found a way to survive their dangerous escapades. This time, they escaped by making a desperate leap fom a moving car. In a movie theater, the Hardys were the target of a crazed killer who shot a gun at them, missing ever so slightly, puncturing the movie screen. At another point, the Hardys eluded death when a flask of flouric acid was about to be sprayed at them and Frank knocked it from the hand of Matthew Clervi, the suspected killer in the story. Finally, the Hardys eluded danger when they were forced into the furnace room and tied near the burning hot furnace by the real killer. Using his usual crafty ways, Joe tied his brother's hands with a slipknot and they were able to escape before the old house collapsed. The Hardy's exciting daring escapes from life-threatening situations make Franklin W. Dixon's novels both suspenseful and exciting to read.

What Counts: How Forward-Thinking Leaders Recognize and Reward Employees (Win-Wins @ Work)
Published in Paperback by Franklin Covey Company (15 March, 2000)
Authors: Franklin Covey Company and Franklin Covey Company
Average review score:

A taste of the good life
Too often (way too often) managment tends to believe that the paycheck at the end of the cycle, or the work itself is award enough to give their employees, and that they dont need any more motivation than that to stay productive. These days, that is being interepreted by long hours and low wages, and no thanks. Our work force is more stressed, and demands are too high on them for the little they get.

This book will give both employers with deep pockets, and those who scrape by a way to reward and motivate their employees to do a good day to day job, and to be more productive.

While not exhaustive, it is a great (and inexpensive) introduction to taste the good life by winning over your employees.

When the Devil Came Down to Dixie: Ben Butler in New Orleans
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (November, 1997)
Author: Chester G. Hearn
Average review score:

The Beast of New Orleans as real person
I have always been fascinated with General Benjamin Butler both because of the story of his ill fated term as military governor of New Orleans during the Civil War and because of his physical image. The photographs always show someone who seems to be a grotesque characature of a human being rather than a real person, somehow appropriate for a man known as 'the Beast of New Orleans'. This book is significant not only for its detailed account of the conflicts and controversy that surrounded Butler during his time in New Orleans, but also for providing enough complementary material to see him as more than an evil abberation. The author does detail the evidence for Butler's depredations - his thefts, corruptions and overzelous application of lethal force - but also provides ample evidence that he was a complex and sometimes thoughtful person as well. In one case, he condemns a man to be hung because he had pulled down the union flag. The man's wife and children go to Butler to plead for his life. He refuses to stop the hanging but promises to be of whatever assistance he can be in the future. Years later the widow approaches him to say that she has been cheated by her lawyer out of her life savings and that she and her children are in jeapordy. Butler finds her a government job and, at his own expense, sees to the children's education. A very complex 'devil' indeed.

For those who enjoy new light cast upon old oversimplified history, this book is excellent. Well written and with a lot that is new to say, this book represents a chance to actually learn something new rahter than simply revisiting the old story.

When the Monkeys Came Back

Authors: Kristine L. Franklin and Robert Roth
Average review score:

enriching, open story
Ms. Franklin's book presents a simple story of a little girl's devotion to the natural environment that existed prior to the arrival of automobiles and non-renewable resource extraction in the valley that she calls home. After the monkeys leave when their habitat is reduced from tree cutting, young Dona Marta carries on a life-long personal crusade to restore the balance that existed in her childhood.
